[Bookplate for Rozsnyay and J. E. Horvath] Grey ink on buff paper. This bookplate depicts a monkey holding with feet and hands the scuplture of standing monkey. The figures in this high contrast image are created by large blank areas and using the grey inked areas for the background and dark details. Two block of text, also in negative, are located at the top and bottom of the image. 162. [Bookplate for Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an academic escutcheon in the heraldic-style. The escutcheon is parted per fess, indented, in chief gules (red), charged with two open books with initialled text. These charges mimic the two books found on the University of Toronto's crest. On the fess, argent (silver), appears a maple bough with three leaves. Though situated differently, this symbol may be drawn from the maple bough with three leaves which appears on the coat of arms of the province of Ontario. The base, azure (blue), is charged with a lamp of knowledge. Above the escutcheon is a crown, which resembles that of George IV, also found on the coat of arms of the University. The crown was included in the University crest to indicate the provision of the institution's royal charter by George IV in 1827. Surrounding the escutcheon is a banner containing the name of the university faculty which issued the bookplate. The illustration identifies itself as an "Ex Libris" and below, cites the originating library. The text and illustration are surrounded by a rectangular frame ornamented with garlands. 163. [Bookplate for Roxie Jayne Gebhardt] Black ink on cream colored paper with an adhesive backing. A fine-line drawing of a tall ship at sea, with all sails unfurled and a British flag (Union Jack) flown as ensign at the stern. The ship sails on choppy waters. To the left, there is an outline of two clouds and three birds in the sky, along with a silhouette of another ship in the distance on the water. The entire drawing is framed by a black, thin-line border with no additional decorative detail. 164. [Bookplate for Roswell Goldie] Black ink on grey paper. A border composed of small circles houses the name and town of the bookplate owner. The words are in Germanic lettering. 165. [Bookplate for Rosen by A. Lee] Executed with black and brown ink on white paper. This bookplate depicts the sun shining down upon two human figures on a brown background. The figure on the left is standing with its mouth open, holding an object upon which is a musical note. The figure on the right is waving with one hand and holding a flower in the other. 166. [Bookplate for Roderick J. Barman by Margaret Noble] This pictorial bookplate was created using black ink on red paper. The bookplate is in the shape of a Greek vase and portrays Clio the Muse of History sitting in a chair reading a scroll. In front of Clio is a basket of scrolls, on if which is inscribed with "M.N. 1966." [Greek text inscribed on chair and at the bottom of the bookplate reads "The Art so long, the Life so short."] 167. [Bookplate for Robert Wilson Reford] Bookplate executed in black ink on white paper and consists of text and a simple border. 168. [Bookplate for Robert Wills] In black ink. This bookplate consists of a garter. Within the garter is a curved crest wreath on which is a demi-gryphon, sajant, holding a battle-axe in between its claws. Below the image is a banner containing the Latin motto. 169. [Bookplate for Robert Smart] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A bird displayed, wings inverted, couped with thistle in beak, with a crest wreath, argent and vert (silver and green). Beneath that is a shield, party per pale, erminois and argent. The dexter side, erminois, per chevron azure (blue) with three chess rooks, gules (red). The dexter side, argent, per fess, gules, with two diamonds, sable (black). 170. [Bookplate for Robert Hall and William Phillips Barrett by William Phillips Barrett] Printed in black ink on cream colored paper. The interior of a private library or study room is depicted. The right-hand side of the room is lined with a wall of books, which is topped with several carved busts. In the centre of the room, a large reading table holds several books and is surrounded by three chairs – an upholstered armchair on the left and two wooden chairs on the right. The books are heavy, bound manuscripts and one is open to display an illuminated frontispiece. In the background, a large bay window looks to a building with a spire that is surrounded by shrubbery. 171. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 172. [Bookplate for Rob. S. Atcheson] In black ink, this bookplate contains a rooster atop a horn, which is itself atop a straight wreath. The rooster is a common heraldic symbol that stands for vigilence. Above the rooster is a banner containing the latin motto. 173. [Bookplate for Richmond Library by Crown Printing Office] Black ink on tan paper. Text surrounded by thin border. 174. [Bookplate for Rev. Wm. Hamilton] Black ink on pink paper. The bookplate depicts a heraldic shield placed at an angle in a nature scene. A leafy tree trunk extends up alongside the right side of the shield and leafy branches arch over the top of the bookplate to the left. At the base of the tree trunk is a globe in a stand. Two closed books are placed in front of the globe on grassy ground. There is some foliage next to the bottom left of the shield as well. Regarding the heraldry, the crest features a tree growing from a crown with leafy points and a diamond pattern on the base. The tree trunk grows through a saw like rectangle, upon which a motto is printed in capitalized, serif, block font. The tree extends upwards into a dense leafy top. The shield has sable stripes, charged with three flowers, two over one. The flowers are stylized with four elaborate petals around a round center. There are some decorative curlicue elements on the side borders of the bookplate. Curling, curving lines extend from the left side of the bookplate like mantling. A white cloth is draped over the top right corner of the shield and pools onto the ground below. At the base of the shield, another motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in curling, sentence case cursive. 175. [Bookplate for Rev. Pierre Beaumont] The bookplate is printed in black ink on cream paper, now discolored. One penciled notation in the lower left. 176. [Bookplate for Ralph H. Kilby] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a circle with a border with black outlines and horizontal black lines. Inside the border there is a crown. The crown as three leafy designs at the top and the band is decorated with different jewels. The crest sits upon a crest-wreath. The shield has a border comprised of curling sections with ornate decorations on the ends. The shield is charged at the top with three black circles with white centers ; smaller versions of the black border featured in the crest. Below the circles are three horizontal black stripes. In the center of the top stripe is a white circle with black dots. Underneath the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, sans serif black font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, cursive, sentence case black font. 177. [Bookplate for Rainald Knightley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue). 178. [Bookplate for R. J. A. Boreman] In black ink. This bookplate displays a bespectacled man, presumably the originator, reading a book by candle-light. With no tonal variation, he is set-off against a black background, framed with a thin, asymmetrical, ornate border. Above the profile-portrait is the originator's name, and below, his Latin motto and a separate component in which a book number has been stamped in red. 179. [Bookplate for R. H. Nisbet] Black ink on cream paper. A boar passant on a straight wreath, beneath which flies a banner with the family motto and the individual's name. 180. [Bookplate for R. A. A. Jones] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an armoured arm extending straight out of a crest-wreath. The hand is clutching a spear with points on either end. Droplets are falling from the right spear point. The shield is black with a white chevron. The chevron has a thin white border along its top and bottom edges. The shield is charged with three white double-ended spears, the same style as that in the crest, two over one. The spears have a more elaborate top tip with a line down the middle, with the bottom tip being a simple, undecorated triangle shape. Below the shield, the motto is printed in black, capitalized, serif font. The ribbon has curling ends that split into two with rounds on each end.
